Manage Android device wirelessly with Kies Air (Part 1)

Akies air AndroidIt is easy to manage Android device wirelessly with Kies Air, note that Kies Air will only install on Android devices manufactured by Samsung. For devices by other manufacturers, you may want to try Airdroid. The downside of using Kies Air is it is inherent inability to use Portable Hotspot to configure the device for network connectivity. This is pathetic, it is quite tedious to achieve the same on a PC . Alternatively, one will need to buy an Access Point or use another android device as a portable hotspot for network connectivity, thereafter connect tablet/phone to be configured and PC to the hotspot created. Check the guide on creating Android Portable Hotspot for detail procedure.

Alternatively, a PC running on Windows 7 and above can be configured to run as a portable hotspot by following the steps below:

1. Click on start, type cmd on the search bar.

2. Right click on cmd icon and chose “Run as administrator” On windows 8, use WIN + F key combination to run the Find command, click on Apps and type cmd on the search bar. Right click on the cmd icon and chose Run as administrator from the options at the bottom of the search window.

3. Type the command below. Change “apname” and “password” to your preferred values. SSID is the name of the wireless access point, while key is the password for connection to the wireless access point from other devices.

Echo Netsh wlan set hostednetwork ssid=apname key=password > wirelessap.bat

The command above will install a batch file that can run as administrator to launch wireless access point. To start up the Access Point, make sure the PC wireless button is turned on , then click on Start > type wirelessap.bat on the search bar, right click on the icon and chose run as administrator.

In order not to confuse the adapters present on the PC, it is recommended to rename the adapter that serves as the access point. Go to Control Panel > Network and sharing Centre > Click on Change Adapter Settings and look for the adapter with the description “Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter” Right click on the adapter and rename it to AP or anything memorable.

The next step is the enable DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol)  on the wireless Access point by enabling Internet connection sharing, this will also enable your android to access the internet. Right click on the adapter you use to connect to the internet ( eg Modem),  chose properties > sharing > Check allow network users to connect to the internet through this computer’s internet connection > and chose the Adapter you just renamed from the drop down menu. Click on OK and you are done.

Turn on WiFi on your phone/tablet, scan for WiFi networks and connect to the access point you’ve just created.
